Hugh was born in Canada
and started oil painting in his teens with supplies handed down from his
grandfather. A Bachelor of Arts degree was
obtained from Trent University
and a real estate firm was created soon afterwards. In 2002 he sailed a catamaran down the eastern
seaboard and has resided in Key West
since.
In addition to being taught by Sanford Birdsey, he has taken
courses through the Studios of Key West, with Don Andrews and Frank Webb. A broad brush style is preferred, which usually
allows viewers to do some interpretation. Many local scenes, subjects and
tropical colors are evident in his paintings.
Hugh is also a thermographer. His striking thermal images are seldom
altered, as they are eye catching in their natural state. This honest approach helps
introduce people to the very real and mysterious world of infrared.
Thermal, or infrared energy, is
light that is not visible because its wavelength is too long to be detected by
the human eye; it's the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we perceive
as heat. Unlike visible light, in the infrared world, everything with a
temperature above absolute zero emits heat.
Hugh is self employed as a building inspector. The infrared camera was purchased to help discover
moisture, insulation, electrical and mechanical problems.
Hugh creates artwork for his own pleasure, but gets even
more enjoyment when others find something in it they like.
